Today we look to Colorlines for more background on the “abortion as genocide” tactic that was most recently employed by anti-choicers in our own state capitol. Colorlines is a daily news site with a focus on race, featuring “a multiracial team of writers who cover stories from the perspective of community, rather than through the lens of power brokers.” They have a lot of great write-ups about this issue, largely because the assertion that abortion is black genocide has been in circulation for years now. I’ll list just a few articles here, but I highly encourage you to peruse their archives on your own and to follow Colorlines generally for a much-needed perspective in reporting, if you don’t already. • Past and Present Collide as the Black Anti-Abortion Movement Grows by Miriam Zoila Pérez. Like the articles from SisterSong on Monday, there’s a lot of good information here about other actions taken by groups using the “abortion as genocide” argument. Perhaps more importantly, the author writes about how the government has been and continues to be inappropriately entangled in women’s reproduction, which is especially true for women of color and low-income women. This is a very important layer to this overall discussion and I’m glad we’re delving into it today.
